Reiki and Massage

Image
When I took first Degree Reiki, I'd been licensed and practicing massage for 6 years. It was  1989, and I didn't know anyone besides my teacher and classmate who did Reiki, and not long after our class, they moved out of state!  Reiki Altar Over the next 6 months, I practiced on myself and family, weaving little bits of Reiki into my massage sessions.  Then in the spring, I met another practioner at an event and discovered she was also an LMT, so  we began trading sessions!  Janelle lived in the larger metro area, so charged more for her sessions. For my sessions,  I asked her to integrate both massage and Reiki. This helped give me ideas and tools for my own practice.  I offered her our longer 'The Works' - sessions which included a steam wrap and facial using natural products, along with the massage. Rather than leaving the room during the wrap, I offeredReiki through the hot towels (~ 20 minutes). We each felt We were getting the best par...

Gaining experience

Image
At the end of our recent Reiki 1 class, our hostess offered the treatment room as a place to practice with other students, and offered to exchange sessions.  We practiced the positions for head, then chest front and back, in the seperate sessions, and I encouraged them to do self Reiki, and practice on family and pets.  Sometimes, students don't have much practice time in class, which may cause them to feel they aren't fully prepared! On a couple of our calls in 2017, Phyllis Furumoto commented we each choose our path, and we each take on what we need in the moment.  NW Reiki gathering at Menucha   This summer I attended the 40th NW Reiki gathering at Menucha center on the Columbia river, and time was offered daily for Reiki exchanges, with 3-5 people at each treatment table. There were brand new Reiki 1 practioners, and Masters who've practiced for decades - all were glad to give and receive! Anneli Twan - a Master for 40 years We heard stories, enjoyed the ab...

Reiki Renewal

Image
I recently joined a  Reiki Community group on FB - this is a great resource for both those newly initiated and for long time practioners! I found a few of the posts very poignant, with one member writing that she hasn't practiced for about 12 years, since losing a family member whom she treated regularly!  She commented that she feels that she's lost her connection to Reiki, and wonders if she needs to be reinitiated? I responsed, 'one of the best ways I know to reconnect, is to start with self Reiki - 20 minutes to an hour daily!' Star gourd Since she's taken both levels 1 and 2, she might include the M/E (Mental emotional) treatment some days, with one hand the forehead/ crown, and one on the back of the head, affirming 'I am ready to reconnect with Reiki!' (10-15 minutes). (This can also be done without the M/E symbol!)  It might be very helpful to practice the heart activation, affirming love of the family member, and letting go of any grief at their...

Morning Prayer

Image
One of my favorite resources is * The Reiki Sourcebook ,  published in 2003 by Bronwen and Frans Siene.  A practice I include most days is the Morning Prayer ( Sourcebook, p 239) . Included among the 'Western techniques,' this practice comes from a Japanese teacher, Shingo Sakuma. Offering the prayer, I like to go outside, stand on my front walk and face the East and rising sun.  Clouds at sunrise Hands in Gasshô , bow three times Clap your hands 2 times - purifying the space around you Repeat in Japanese or English three times:  HARAE - TAMAE  (cleanse all) KIYOME -  TAMAE  (purify all) MAMORI -  TAMAE (protect all) SAKIHAE -  TAMAE (may all beings be happy) The Sun's mantra (3x) A-ME-TE-RA-SU OO MI-KAMI Make a personal wish/ names of those you're praying for (3x) KAMNAGARA - TAMACHI - HAEMASE (as the God wishes) Gasshô - bow one time and give thanks.  When i began this prayer practice, I wrote the Japanese words on a card, an...

Practices: Gasshô

Image
There are many beautiful Reiki practices which can help us feel the energy -  gasshô   (Two hands together) is one of the simplest! You can do a longer meditation using the gasshô - this is one of the key daily practices of Japanese Reiki. Light hands Seishin toitsu - (unified mind) Bring the hands up to Gassho (prayer) position Focus on dan tien (hara) Inhale and bring energy into your hands. Exhale, and feel the energy move between your palms, along the arms and back to the dan tien. (5-30 minutes)   Move your hands ~ 4" apart and sense the energy for a few breaths, then slowly being them together again In Japan, they often recite (mentally) Waka - simple nature based poetry 'The moon - how beautiful it rises - flooding the fields with light' If you have taken Reiki and know the 5 principles, recite them now ( this video is helpful if you want to practice them in Japanese Bring your hands to rest then on your heart or belly and absorb the energy. Whilst doing...

Practical Reiki

Image
The Reiki precepts begin  kyo dake wa , just for today ... I love the concept that we become the jumper cables for the energy - it flows through, not from us. When we have Reiki, we can invite the energy to flow into our activities and interactions throughout each day.  Morning bowl While Mrs Takata awaited surgery in Dr Maeda's hospital in Tokyo, each meal prepared by the doctor's sister, the dietician, was  blessed with Reiki : green tea, Rice, beans, steamed vegetables (especially carrots & beets), seaweed.  As she learned Reiki herself, Mrs Takata blessed her own food and drink, and later recommended that her students do the same. Teachers in many traditions suggest blessing what we serve and ingest, when we do this daily, it soon becomes second nature. We can also use Reiki around the home: set up an altar hold seeds or herbs a minute before we plant them bless a craft project we're working on sweep the floor whilst talking with a friend or on the phon...

Reiki 1 offering

Image
When a friend or family member is suffering, do you wish there was  'something more'  you could do? Welcome to Reiki! Summer skies If you are sensitive to energy, and easily overwhelmed, you may find Reiki helps mitigate that, and that you're better able to function in groups.  We become the 'jumper cables' connecting to source, and Reiki flows exactly where it's needed.  Artists, writers and musicians often find Reiki helps them tap the font of inspiration.  In Reiki I, students learn basic Reiki practices, form and history, and are initiated in traditional Usui Reiki I. We will also make cards for integrating the five Reiki Precepts.  Basic hands on Treatment for self and others Reiki as 'first aid' Attunement to Reiki Spiritual, emotional and mental health support Practice time Reiki precepts as guidelines History and background of Reiki and the Masters Spiritual, mental and emotional healing Time for Q and A  A massage therapist since 1...

Preparing for Class

Image
Before taking a Reiki class or other energy training, it can helpful to spend time the week before in preparation.  This 'sets the stage' for receiving and integrating the energy and teachings.  A favorite reference, The Reiki Sourcebook notes, 'Reiki re-aligns one with one's true path, source and spirit.'   What we do before and after the class and attunements facilitates that realignment!  We can also Deepen with Reiki at any time, on our own or with other practioners.  Some of my favorite experiences have been sharing time with others attuned to Reiki during 'chance' meetings or more formal Reiki shares.  Preparation: It's ideal to receive a Reiki session the week prior to initiation. Eat consciously - whole local foods when possible Drink extra water, rest as needed Limit use of alcohol, coffee, any drugs (take your usual prescriptions!) Note synchronicities, dreams, and insights Incorporate some gentle, energy enhancing movement If you med...

Reiki Anniversary

Image
This month marks my 30th anniversary as a Reiki Master -  When the student is ready ....  A friend calls it holes - when you know something's important, and you need to do it, but - why? I can trace my "introduction" to the healing modality I'd been seeking to a harp concert  (by a 2nd degree practitioner!) 9 months before, in a bookstore about an hour away. Who could resist Karen Brunner's title, "Out of the Silence, Into the Wind" ... And her tape, Where the Dragons Come to Drink - recorded the summer before during the Lion's Gate portal, 8-8-88. So I was drawn to that January concert!  ... After the amazing concert, I looked for the right book , picked up one on Chiron (Barbara Hand Clow's), the wounded healer ...  That fall, I saw an announcement for a talk on Chiron - at the same bookstore that hosted the concert! The catalogue was in the Mail, when I returned from offering a talk to on asteroids to a local Astrology group - how could I No...

Cats Invented Reiki

Image
Ask a cat if they would like some Reiki, and they'll likely tell you they invented it!!  When I embarked on my Reiki journey, it seemed by 'happenstance!'   During her talk on the asteroid  Chiron, the 'wounded healer , Analyse mentioned Chiron oversees healing initiations, & invited those interested to register for a Reiki class in a few weeks. I was intrigued, & signed up for her upcoming class on the spot. I'd long realized there was 'more we could do' with our hands, without personal effort; but hadn't been sure how to tap it consistently.   One other student and one of Analyse's new Masters and I arrived for the class. After the introduction, we moved to the massage tables for our first sessions, and the resident kitty was at the door, wanting in! It joined Analyse for sessions, then would go out during the Reiki lessons!                    Coal and Ash (grandkitties) In the years since that f...

Beginning - Reiki 1

Image
When a friend or family member is suffering, do you wish there was 'something more' you could do? When I began offering massage in the early 80s, I often felt that way, .... then I discovered Reiki!  I've offered Reiki sessions and classes for over 25 years, and am continually touched by Reiki's gentle power, and suitability for most circumstances.  I recently spent time with my friend Margot, who was initiated by Takata in 1972. She enjoyed the class, but didn't focus much attention on Reiki till she was studying massage a decade later, and was reintroduced. Like me, she opens the Reiki Door through sessions, classes and circles in her community, and loves Reiki.  Have you taken Reiki, and would like to reconnect with the energy? Or is it something you've wanted to learn? In either case, I'd love to work with you.  If you are sensitive to energy, and easily overwhelmed, you may find Reiki helps mitigate that, and you're better able to function...

Red Thread Reiki

When studying Intentional Creativity last year, preparing to become a Color of Woman teacher and IC coach, I needed to offer several Red Thread Circles and events. My teacher Shiloh Sophia invited me to consider the connections  between Reiki and the IC teachings, "I know there are connections, explore what they are." A Chinese legend tells that we are connected before birth with those whom we're destined to meet by an invisible Red Thread. Through out lives, the thread may twist, stretch and tangle, but will never break. We each hold, and are responsible for our own piece of this thread. I immediately saw a connection with my own Reiki Thread, and considered how to weave the IC teachings to support my Reiki students. In April on 2015, I included a simple red thread circle during our Reiki I class, inviting each initiate to share her piece of the thread. During 2nd Degree class in July, we incorporated the symbol practice sheets into a Medicine Basket journal cover...

Clearing Old Stories

Image
What stories run your life? Can you imagine learning ways to identify and clear the ones which no longer serve? Can you feel into living unrestrained by the old patterns? Reiki and the soulful story process offer you that opportunity! Many of us live with past beliefs and old responses, which keep us from living the lives we long for. When we bring those old stories to light, we have a Golden opportunity to change the script. Reiki and Intentional Creativity alchemise the transformation, making a path for true change. The Reiki principles offer a set of guidelines which can help us define core values and  Soulful Story Cards change the stories. Adapting them from  principles set forth by the Meiji emperor, Reiki founder Mikeo Usui offered these ideals to his students: For today only Anger not  Worry not With appreciation do work To others be kind Show gratitude Reiki and Intentional Creativity offer many tools for personal growth and positive shifts...

Reiki Class

Image
What a wonderful time we had in class! There were six students, & five who came to 'Refresh' with Reiki; it was a wonderful experience! As we began, I asked each student to introduce themselves, speak a little to what brought them to the class, & share a concern or 'Worry.' Those Refreshing or 'Auditing' the class generally had felt a pull to reconnect with the Reiki energy, or felt a special need for it at this time of their lives. They all were delighted to have the opportunity both for themselves, & to encourage those just beginning. The new students were eager to learn, AND several expressed a concern that THEY couldn't learn it! One mentioned SEVERAL family members 'do' Reiki, but she tends to be more Left Brain/analytical. She wanted to learn, but just didn't know if she'd feel anything. That was a common concern "Everyone else is going to feel it, but I'm not." Another, an electrician, commented t...

Countdown

Image
Only 3 days 'till we meet for our Reiki I class - are you ready? I've been working on the class materials, & printed the hand-outs, which I'll copy tomorrow. It's been fun putting some of the information I've been blogging about into document format, and deciding what to include in your packets. We are now up to 8 students, and at least 5 who intend to audit! I'll send a Group Message on Facebook, with the address. A couple of students have asked 'how to decide' where they fit on the sliding scale. Since I began teaching Reiki in the fall of 1991, I've wanted to make Reiki initiation available to anyone who felt called to do the work. I've also realized, like Hawayo Takata, that there needed to be an 'energy exchange' for students to value the teachings. In her stories about Reiki, Takata shared that as she began teaching Reiki (in the late 30s), she wanted to initiate friends & family at no charge, but was discourage...

Ready for Reiki

Image
When the sudent - or teacher, is ready, things happen! For several years I taught Reiki intensively - small classes & workshop offerings at Breitenbush Hot Springs, a 'sabatical' (from massage) year at the coast with weekly Reiki circles, then classes here in McMinnville, including initiating my daughter & daughter-in law .... then those girls began having babies, & my GRANDMAMA years began! That coincided with my move to a co-op office with several treatment rooms, but no large classroom space. I adapted by teaching a few classes elsewhere, & offering individual training in my own Therapy room. Recently, a friend expressed interest in a class, & I approached a couple of friends about using their spaces for classes. So in January, I'll begin offering classes again on a regular basis! I'm excited. Your Reiki class, teacher & community: You'll be attuned to Reiki - a lifelong tool!  Learn to treat yourself and loved ones (including p...
