Chronic pain

Image
A recent inquiry in our Reiki Community group was on coping with one's own chronic pain. Takata's story of her healing journey offers a good example for healing from chronic issues. Takata received treatment at the Reiki clinic AND from Dr Medea's sister, Mrs Shimura, daily for 3 weeks, after which she felt better. She continued to receive treatments for 6 months, before beginning training. She became a student, learning and practicing for the next year, completing Okuden (what we now call 2nd degree) by the end of that time. (Reiki Sourcebook,  pp 144-45) My massage mentor Jeanne often said healing is like peeling an onion - the longer the issue has plagued you, the longer it's (likely) to take to heal - and we work on a layer of two at a time! She'd often tell a client, 'if its bothered you for several years, and you come regularly, it will likely take several months to notice a shift! But it is likely you'll feel better!' Morning Prayer

Image
One of my favorite resources is * The Reiki Sourcebook ,  published in 2003 by Bronwen and Frans Siene.  A practice I include most days is the Morning Prayer ( Sourcebook, p 239) . Included among the 'Western techniques,' this practice comes from a Japanese teacher, Shingo Sakuma. Offering the prayer, I like to go outside, stand on my front walk and face the East and rising sun.  Clouds at sunrise Hands in Gasshô , bow three times Clap your hands 2 times - purifying the space around you Repeat in Japanese or English three times:  HARAE - TAMAE  (cleanse all) KIYOME -  TAMAE  (purify all) MAMORI -  TAMAE (protect all) SAKIHAE -  TAMAE (may all beings be happy) The Sun's mantra (3x) A-ME-TE-RA-SU OO MI-KAMI Make a personal wish/ names of those you're praying for (3x) KAMNAGARA - TAMACHI - HAEMASE (as the God wishes) Gasshô - bow one time and give thanks.  When i began this prayer practice, I wrote the Japanese words on a card, an...

Preparing for Class

Image
Before taking a Reiki class or other energy training, it can helpful to spend time the week before in preparation.  This 'sets the stage' for receiving and integrating the energy and teachings.  A favorite reference, The Reiki Sourcebook notes, 'Reiki re-aligns one with one's true path, source and spirit.'   What we do before and after the class and attunements facilitates that realignment!  We can also Deepen with Reiki at any time, on our own or with other practioners.  Some of my favorite experiences have been sharing time with others attuned to Reiki during 'chance' meetings or more formal Reiki shares.  Preparation: It's ideal to receive a Reiki session the week prior to initiation. Eat consciously - whole local foods when possible Drink extra water, rest as needed Limit use of alcohol, coffee, any drugs (take your usual prescriptions!) Note synchronicities, dreams, and insights Incorporate some gentle, energy enhancing movement If you med...

Reiki Precepts

Image
When I took my first Reiki class in the fall of 1989, my teacher Annalise taught us the 5 Reiki Principles or precepts, and invited us to work with them as we 'cleared the pipes' for Reiki to flow, and practices being more present. Neurographic doodle on 'Presence' As I began teaching several years later, I was surprised when students from other Masters told me they hadn't realized the Principles were 'really' part of Reiki! (Just something their teacher added) a precept is, 'a general rule which helps you decide how to behave in particular circumstances' - offering a moral compass.  Reiki Principles - my Reiki journal More of Reiki's origins became known in the West after the discovery of founder Usui's memorial stone in 1994. Translated, part of the inscription reads, 'Thus, before the teachings, the 'Ikun' (admonition) of the Meiji Emperor should reverently be told and the Five Precepts (gokai) be chanted and kept in mind morn...

Diminuitive Dynamo - part 2

Image
After Mrs Takata recovered her health, she was ready for the next step:  Learning how to do this wonderful Reiki!  She asked Mr Hayashi, but he was reluctant to teach a Western person Reiki, feeling that Japan had already 'lost' enough of its teachings to the US. “It is a closely guarded treasure. It is for Japanese people only.”   She WAS an American woman! When she wanted to see something, she stopped and looked. When she wanted to know something, she asked. She respected his answer, and said no more; but she wasn't about to give up! One day, her surgeon, Dr Maeda, asked how she was doing. She told him that she had a reaction after the forth treatment. Then, for 14 days & nights, 'bathroom, bathroom, bathroom! So much I had to crawl back to my room. I was able to walk for the first time December 24, my birthday; and the next day I was a new person. I gained 14 pounds, and lost 10 years! I am getting well, & I want to learn Reiki. Please, doctor...
