Holding Space
Recently in a social media group for massage therapists, the administration posed the question of how practioners keep pre-session anxiety to a minimum.
In my early years of offerings seasons, I struggled more with this, and was often stressed! Now, I tend to arrive 10-20 minutes before my first session, to set the room, and ground into the space.
And - I invoke the Time Angels! My Reiki friend Anita and I began working with these timely helpers in the mid 90s, as we 'hurried' to get to a Reiki Circle 'on time' - they seem always willing to help!
I've practiced Reiki for 35 of my 40 years offering massage, and Reiki clicks in as soon as I enter my treatment space. I keep a salt lamp in the room and plug it in when I arrive, increasing the negative ions in the room.
After sessions, my mentor Jeanne taught us to wash with warm water for sanitation, then rinse with cold water (elbows down) to disconnect from our client's energy. Stepping outside for a few minutes also helps.
I use fragrance free detergent strips and ~ 1/4 C borax water (borax dissolved in hot water - antifungal, antiviraland antibacterial) to wash my linens - this also helps clear energy.
I share the space with another therapist, and we have a simpatico relationship, keeping the space energetically clear for each other and our clients. At Breitenbush, we rotated between treatment rooms, and it was important to keep spaces clear physically and energetically.
Several years ago, the acupuncturist in our clinic had a client with a health scare during their session (all was well!)
I was in session next to her room, and after my client left, Lisa asked my assistance in clearing the room of the traumatic energy! She got fresh mint and sage from the nearby market, and we dipped those in water to rub down the walls, and blessed the space with Reiki.
Our Feng Shui practioner Gwynne recommends adding a bit of salt to the water or natural cleaning solution, and periodically washing the treatment room walls. Like rinsing with cold water, this provides an energetic clearing.
How do you prevent pre-treatment stress?
