The Power of Attunement
In a recent post in the Usui Reiki Ryōhō group on Facebook, the querent asked 'if Reiki energy is in everything, why do we need to be attuned?' Why, indeed?
I've been asked this question several times over the last 34 years, and usually offer a story...
Mrs Takata, who brought Reiki to the West, used the analogy of Radio waves - and talked about tuning in to the Reiki Channel - moving the dial till you get a clear signal. She also suggested envisioning the 'distant' symbol as a radio tower, for beaming energy / 'sending' the a Reiki energy over distance of space and time.
In my own experience as a Reiki teacher in the Usui/ Hayashi/Takata / Furumoto lineage: one of my first students in 1991 was very peaved that her 'guides' insisted she take my Reiki class!
She already DID healing, thank you very much!
Sigh ... they kept nudging, so she came (I've written another part of her story here)
We talked a few minutes, A. was VERY reluctant to stay, but generally followed her intuition...
I suggested she remain for the introduction (history, stories of the Reiki lineage bearers and healing), but when it was time for the initiation, she would need to decide whether she would stay or leave.
When the time for the practical teachings & initiation arrived, she said yes, & we proceeded to initiation.
After the first attunement, A. told us that before, when she wanted to offer healing, she would gather it from around her ... and now, 'it just flows in and through me!' - as Mrs Takata said, 'hands on, Reiki on!' It was suddenly a lot less effort!
My friend is very intuitive and clairvoyant - and could see energy and beyond time ... she commented that when she and the other students offered Reiki, she saw it coming into their crowns in an arch; and when she observed me, it came in a straight column (which she felt was connected to passing the attunement)
She was, in the end, grateful to her guides and for the initiation. As an indigenous healer said - 'the medicine path chooses us.'
In the early 80s, I attended a talk from the director of Linfield's BA nursing program. He had studied Hopi healers - and in response a question, he paused, took in the audience, then told us he had been chosen as a student, and initiated and trained in their traditional ways, and was acknowledged as a Hopi healer! We all say a little straighter - and I was so glad of come to hear him!!
(He was not Hopi by blood)
He bespoke the path to becoming a Hopi healer: some were struck by lightening - and lived! Another fell off a mesa - this 'opened the door' for them to learn healing, and was followed by the years of training, plus taking a ceremonial roll representing a Kachina in traditional ceremonies and dances .....
He also bespoke how hard it was for the younger generation to commit to the path - there weren't a lot of jobs on the reservation, so they often went to work in cities - but requests for extended time off for ceremony wasn't well understood by their non-indigenous bosses ...
When Reiki came to me several years after that talk, I was so grateful - and feel Reiki attunement is a a simpler path to connecting with the healing stream! And that it enriched my own connection to universal energy.
